A fruit crisp can seem like a lot of work — even the task of chopping enough fruit to fill an 8-by-8-inch glass baking dish feels like a dealbreaker during the holidays.

But a fruit crisp in a skillet is a much more manageable affair. It has the essence of a crisp — sweet, tender fruit and a crunchy, buttery topping — done quickly on the stovetop. Soft fruit cooks faster, but you can use firm fruit like apples; just sauté them a bit longer, but it won’t take much more time.
