Vegan alternatives to meat are popping up everywhere. It reminds me of all the gluten-free alternatives to wheat-laden baked goods. Maybe it’s the consumer and maybe it’s the food industry, but it seems like people seem to gravitate toward an all or nothing way of thinking about things.

Why is that? What’s wrong with the in-between?

When it comes to meat, I’ve always been a little picky. My family thinks I’m snobbish, but I would rather not eat meat at all than eat the bulk ground beef that my dad got on sale, even though it was already so cheap there is no way a farmer made a decent wage producing it.

For me, it’s a combination of reasons: It has a lot to do with health. Healthy people eat healthy food, and healthy meat comes from healthy animals. It also has a lot to do with the environment. For both of these reasons, I try to avoid food that comes from CAFOs, but the problem with preferring free-range, grass-fed meat is the effect on my budget.
