McDonald’s C.E.O. Makes an Employee’s Median Yearly Income within Two Hours

In the New York Times’ article on the 200 highest paid C.E.O.s of 2018, you can scroll down to find Stephen J. Easterbrook, chief executive of McDonald’s, who’s been leading the Golden Arches since 2015.

While his earnings dropped by about $6 million from 2017 — he’s one of the few whose compensation dropped from the previous year in salary, bonus, perks, stock, and options — he earned a combined income of $16 million, according to the data compiled by Equilar, the consulting firm that reports public companies’ executive pay series in partnership with the Times.

Compare Easterbrook’s salary to the median McDonald’s worker salary of $7,473, one of the lowest on the list. (McDonald’s and many other food businesses are notorious about not offering employees full-time work.) According to Equilar’s calculations, Easterbrook brings in the equivalent of $43,835 a day — which translates to the median salary of a McDonald’s worker before the second hour of a standard eight-hour shift.
