It was 6 in the morning when my son jumped on my back as I was sleeping and hit me over the head with a pillow. “Wake up! It’s shakshuka time!” Bleary-eyed, having worked late into the night, as many of my fellow parents do, I let out a huge “Ughhh!” before turning over and trying to go back to sleep. It was no use, though; he was adamant. I promised him a good breakfast, and he wasn’t going to budge. I half staggered over the side of the bed, then crawled down the stairs to the kitchen. Kids. Love ‘em.

Sunday morning breakfasts (and lunch and dinner) with my son are somewhat of a ritual around my house now. Seldom well-planned but executed with precision, they are usually the result of us getting captivated by something on a food or cooking show.

My son and I hatched one of our usual plans — we need to make that dish! But how? We’ve never even heard of it.
